Andy Osman
The man behind Symphonic Winds' 6:50 AM rehearsals. Mr. Osman's no-nonsense teaching style and vast knowledge of musical terms, styles, and literature has made him somewhat of a legend at Long Beach Poly. Mr. Osman directs the Poly Symphonic Winds, Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and String Orchestra.? In the Fall, he also directs one of the Jazz B ensembles, and then takes over the Poly Concert Band for the Spring semester.? Mr. Osman has taught at Poly since 1983, and served as the Music Curriculum Leader for the Long Beach Unified School District for eleven years before returning full-time to the Poly music program in 2005.
A graduate of UCLA, Mr. Osman was selected as a Northwestern University Summer Fellow in 1991. He served as the guest conductor for the 1996 All-Southern California Junior High School Honor Orchestra, as well as manager for the All-Southern California High School Honor Orchestra numerous times, and has condcuted numerous honor groups throughout southern California.? He also serves as a festival adjudicator for the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA) and as a guest clinician.
Chris Stevens
Chris teaches Marching Band and AP Music Theory at Poly in addition to directing the jazz program which currently includes over 150 students in 5 different classes. Poly jazz ensembles perform regularly in the greater Long Beach community, and participate with honors in local and regional jazz festivals, including first place awards at the Reno Jazz Festival in 2007 and 2008. Chris was the conductor of the 2007 SCSBOA All-Southern Jr. High Jazz All-Stars, and he directs the Jazz session at Arrowbear Music Camp each summer. He also currently serves on the Executive Board of the California Alliance for Jazz as Secretary.
Chris earned a B.A. in Psychology from CSU Fullerton in 1988 and a teaching credential in Music from CSU Long Beach in 2000.
Julia Gustafson
A graduate of Millersville State University in Pennsylvania, with a Master's degree in Music Education from CSULA and a double-major in Piano and Violin Performance, Mrs. Gustafson is well-suited to instruct in the Poly music program. where she instructs the Poly Piano program.? She teaches at Poly on a part-time basis and happily spends the balance of her day as an "at-home" mom with her young son.
Previously the director of the LBUSD Suzuki Strings Magnet Program since its inception in 1981, Mrs. Gustafson has registered nine teaching training classes in string pedagogy with the Suzuki Association of Americas(SAA). Mrs. Gustafson has served as guest clinician at SCSBOA conferences and has taught violin and piano privately in Long Beach for many years.
